Screwtape Questions Chapter 9-12 Chapter 9 These trough periods that he discusses in my opinion are time when we get tempted and so we are vulnerable and easiest to fall into temptation. During these times Satan wants us to fall so he can distract us from our goals. Yes, I would say I have "trough periods" not the one he discusses in the book, but with mainly TV shows. Chapter 10 I think "parallel lives" is when for example he says, "He can take a positive pleasure in the perception that the two sides of his life are inconsistent." So to me in other words it's not what it seems. A man can adjust to his "worldly friends" and still be with the "grocer" side, but if he sticks to one side more than the other he could feel unsatisfied. So in shorter terms I think its just living like a two-faces life. Chapter 11 Reading Chapter 11 I got that music and joy can be good if God is based at the center of it, but sadly it can also have an evil side. Music and joy could also be evil if its more for our own selfish motives. Chapter 12 He says, "the safest road to Hell is the gradual one-the gentle slopes, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signpost." I would have to disagree. I wouldn't want to be on my way to Hell in the first place, but since we are all sinners and on our way to Hell at one point. I would rather be know instead of thinking everything is fine when obviously its not.
